How can I update my bios using real mode DOS?

Making a clean boot disk is quite simple: format a disk, then go to the c:\windows\command\ebd folder, then copy the files io.sys and command.com to a, then copy your bios files. And reboot your computer with the floppy in it.

Is Norton Utilities 2000 compatible with Windows Me?

No unfortunately, Norton utilities 2000 isn't 100% compatible with Windows Me. Indeed the protected recycle bin won't work at all under this new OS. The best thing for you to do is to wait for an update or a Norton Utilities upgrade.

Norton Internet Security 2000 users hot tip

If you own Internet Security 2000 it's recommended to not install it under Windows Me until you get an update from Symantec. Indeed the software may causes crashes when you establish internet connections.

Will PartitionMagic 5.01 work on this new OS?

Unfortunately as PartitionMagic 5.01 uses the real DOS mode to make deep partition changes it won't work correctly under Windows Me. Wait for an update from Powerquest.

Keeping Your Windows Me Machine Healthy

1: Run Scandisk weekly
2: Run Defrag at the same time each month
3: Remove unused programs on a regular basis. Also remove any unwanted Windows Me components that you would never use via ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in the control panel.
4: Keep a check on your hardware's websites for new drivers. Especially for graphic cards, there tends to be new graphic drivers for all of the main graphic hardware released almost once a month.

We recommend that for stability you go with the new Digitally Signed drivers that your hardware makers will release once Windows Me hits the stores.
5: Keep a weekly check on Windows Update to check if any new Windows Me patches or security fixes have been released.
6: Clean out both your Internet Explorer Cache and your Outlook Express Cache each month to free up drive space and speed up browsing/reading mail and news.

Working With Windows DVD Player

Microsoft has included a much improved version of their DVD Player in Windows Me.

The player is now called "Windows DVD Player" and has improved navigation, speed of loading and better video quality due to improved DVD Direct Media files shipping with Windows Me.

Loading Windows DVD Player is simple, despite it being a little annoying that the program is hidden away where most people wouldn't look.

Go to C:\WINDOWS\DVDPLAY.EXE and you can run the program from there.

Navigating through the Windows DVD Player is sometimes confusing for new users. The navigation bar along the bottom of the Windows DVD Player is where you control everything from. There are play, pause, fast-forward and rewind buttons along with the usual next chapter buttons too. There is also a menu button which lets you jump into your DVD title's main menu. Next you have a volume and mute area and an eject DVD button

Next row (If you choose to show it) has more advanced options like speed settings, changing the DVD's audio, subtitle and angle settings.

The next part is great, you can zoom in and out of DVD titles no matter what ratio the dvd is, I'm sure this will be great for all you porn fans out there. Next is another great button for me, it is called Capture and allows you to take screenshots of all your favorite parts in the movies you watch.

The final part is the options, from here you can set passwords, basic changes to the subtitles and screensaver options.

To reset Internet Explorer Web settings

If you installed another Web browser after installing Internet Explorer and Internet Tools, some of your Internet Explorer settings may have changed.

You can reset your Internet Explorer settings to their original defaults, including your home page and search pages, and choice of default browser, without changing your other browser's settings.

On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

Click the Programs tab.

Click the Reset Web Settings button.

To turn off 32-bit PC Card support

Open System properties in Control Panel.

Click the Device Manager tab.

Make sure View devices by type is selected.

Click the plus sign next to PCMCIA Socket, and then double-click your PC Card controller.

Under Device usage, select the Disable in this hardware profile check box, and then click OK.

To start your computer without starting Windows

Click Start, and then click Shut down.

Click Restart, click OK, and then press and hold the CTRL key until the Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition Startup Menu appears.

For some computers, you can use F8 instead of CTRL to bring up the Microsoft Windows ME Startup Menu. Do one of the following:

If you want to load Windows as usual, press the number key that corresponds to Normal, and then press ENTER.

If you want to create a file listing your computer's boot and load activity, press the number key that corresponds to Logged, and then press ENTER. Windows loads as usual and writes the activity to the C:\Bootlog.txt file.

If you want to load Windows using minimum drivers and basic options, press the number key that corresponds to Safe mode, and then press ENTER. Use this option if you have difficulties with hardware and other issues in Windows. In Safe mode, you can diagnose and fix errors.

If you want to step through each activity in the Windows load sequence, allowing or disallowing an activity as you choose, press the number key that corresponds to Step-by-step confirmation, and then press ENTER.
