Begin the windows install as if it
was the full version, during the install you will be prompted for a previous
operating system, at his point put your old operating system CD in the drive and
browse to the WIN95 folder.
Click ok, the windows upgrade
will confirm this is a full version and continue with the upgrade (after you
replace the upgrade CD
The program you need is
called Batch 98 and is located on the Windows 98 CD (CD:\tools\reskit\batch),
this allows you to specify parameters for the installation of windows 98 ie
name, time zone, keyboard layout, options which setup usually asks you during
the install process.
Once run it will produce a text file. Save it as msbatch.inf and placed in the
same folder as the setup files,
Windows 98 will run it
automatically. Follow the next steps to configure.
Copy the WIN98 folder from your Windows CD to the Hard Drive
Now browse to the \tools\reskit\batch folder on the CD
Double click on the Setup.exe file
Choose the "Gather now" option.
Once complete save the file as msbatch.inf in your win98 folder that you copied
to the hard drive
Now burn the Win98 folder onto a CD, in future install windows from this it will
install all your own preferences automatically.
For Further information refer to the batch98.chm file in the same folder.
Click on Start/Settings/Control
Panel/System then device manager. Double click on Display Adapters and delete
anything listed underneath the main heading. Allow computer to reboot twice and
everything should be OK.
If not boot into
safemode, into device manger again and delete everything under Monitors, once
again reboot and touch wood problem should be fixed.
Failing the above 2, reinstall/install your driver for the Video Card and/or
your Monitor.
Boot to Safemode on
startup ( Press F8 key before Windows Splash Screen) and type MSCONFIG, remove
ticks from Autoexec.bat and Config.sys, click on ok and reboot.
You should now be able to
access windows.
If you have difficulty
with the above then, use your windows 98 boot disk, and boot up with it, select
command prompt only and when at the A: prompt type the following
C: <enter>
rename autoexec.bat autoexec.bak <enter>
rename config.sys config.bak <enter>
now press "CTRL ALT & DELETE" on keyboard to restart your computer
