Installing a Windows 98 Upgrade CD without a Previous OS installed

Windows 98 Batch Install – Automate the entire process

The program you need is called Batch 98 and is located on the Windows 98 CD (CD:\tools\reskit\batch), this allows you to specify parameters for the installation of windows 98 ie name, time zone, keyboard layout, options which setup usually asks you during the install process.

Once run it will produce a text file. Save it as msbatch.inf and placed in the same folder as the setup files,

Windows 98 will run it automatically. Follow the next steps to configure.

Copy the WIN98 folder from your Windows CD to the Hard Drive

Now browse to the \tools\reskit\batch folder on the CD

Double click on the Setup.exe file

Choose the "Gather now" option.

Once complete save the file as msbatch.inf in your win98 folder that you copied to the hard drive

Now burn the Win98 folder onto a CD, in future install windows from this it will install all your own preferences automatically.

For Further information refer to the batch98.chm file in the same folder.

No Access to CD-Rom After Installing 98

This can occur if you have a dual-channel IDE installed on your computer.

To fix this:

Select Start/Settings/Control Panel/System

select the Device Manager

select + beside Hard Disk Controllers select IDE controller, select Properties, and settings

In the Dual IDE Channel box, select Both IDE Channels, and then click OK twice, and restart your computer

Desktop looks like Safemode

Click on Start/Settings/Control Panel/System then device manager. Double click on Display Adapters and delete anything listed underneath the main heading. Allow computer to reboot twice and everything should be OK.

If not boot into safemode, into device manger again and delete everything under Monitors, once again reboot and touch wood problem should be fixed.

Failing the above 2, reinstall/install your driver for the Video Card and/or your Monitor.

Hanging on Windows splash screen

Boot to Safemode on startup ( Press F8 key before Windows Splash Screen) and type MSCONFIG, remove ticks from Autoexec.bat and Config.sys, click on ok and reboot.

You should now be able to access windows.

If you have difficulty with the above then, use your windows 98 boot disk, and boot up with it, select command prompt only and when at the A: prompt type the following

C: <enter>

rename autoexec.bat autoexec.bak <enter>

rename config.sys config.bak <enter>

now press "CTRL ALT & DELETE" on keyboard to restart your computer

Windows 98 SE hangs when the machine is being suspended.

To fix this:

Select Start/Run and type msconfig then press OK

Select on System.ini

Click the + sign next to the [386Enh] section

Select the line PagingFile=

click Edit

Change the lowercase drive letter to uppercase

Click OK

Restart your computer

If the above does not help then try turning of your screen saver, or changing it, I have found this causing the problems at times
